In the base camp after the attack – delayed return
15.03.2012We hoped for fast descent and return to Poland. However, it is not going to work out for us. Mild frostbites of the conquerors definitely qualify them for helicopter transport, but the weather does not allow for that. Janusz Gołąb suffers from second degree frostbites of his nose – at the very tip of it the frostbites are of third degree; Adam Bielecki has a frostbitten nose and toe, both second degree, and unfortunately blister on the toe has already broken. Both of them remain under remote supervision of Robert Szymczak, M.D. A five-day descent from the base camp in winter via 80-km long Baltoro Glacier could result in further frostbites that could in turn lead to more serious conditions and in consequence, permanent health damage. Furthermore, sores and infections could appear during the descent and their consequences could be extremely serious.
Artur Hajzer and Agnieszka Bielecka delay the descent as they are engaged in search operation regarding the international team lost on the South face of Gasherbrum I.
See you in Poland at the end of March,
Participants of the expedition
